Blankets made in memory of Constance Allard in effort to continue her legacy
Blankets made in memory of Constance Allard in effort to continue her legacy
Connie was born and raised in Central Falls, Rhode Island. She became a single parent early on, at a time when it was not accepted. With a young child to care for, Connie worked nights at home doing jewelry piece work. When she was able, she got a job taking the bus back and forth to work until she saved enough to get herself driving lessons and in time, a car. For many years she worked two and sometimes three jobs to make ends meet. Connie’s motivation to help others eventually led to getting a job with the State of Rhode Island in the Department of Human Services.
Connie went through tough times so she understood what it was like to struggle. She helped to start a church program that collected food and made holiday baskets for those less fortunate. She also collected clothing from a children’s factory in Central Falls. She would pick up clothing that wasn’t being sold, dump it all on her dining room table and sort it by color and size. She would then deliver some to the church program and would bring the rest to the office for clients to pick up.
That wasn’t enough for Connie. She also opened her heart and her home. After purchasing a three tenement house in Central Falls, which was actually the home she grew up in, she was always open to renting an apartment to someone needing a hand. There were countless tenants that she would help to furnish their place and even cook for. She would run meals up the stairs, always willing to give that little extra support.
After raising her own daughter she then opened her own home to take in numerous foster children. In her later years she continued caring for and doting on her grandchildren, great nephew, great grandson and great-great nephews and a niece, leaving them all with loving memories of “Memere”.
There was no end to Connie’s kindness, that’s why blankets made in her name will continue her legacy. If you received one please pass on a kind word or gesture and think of her because kindness is far reaching as she has shown us all.
